Your wallet is the gatekeeper to your digital assets. Yet most losses aren't caused by sophisticated hacks — they come from a handful of avoidable mistakes. Here are seven we see again and again.
- Not backing up your seed phrase. Without a secure offline backup, wallet access can be lost permanently if a device breaks, resets, or disappears. Write it down, keep multiple copies, and never store it digitally.
- Sharing your recovery information. No legitimate service will ever ask for your seed phrase or private key. Anyone who does is trying to take your funds.
- Falling for phishing scams. Fake websites and messages can look real. Always type the URL yourself, check the domain, and never connect to a site you weren't expecting.
- Using public Wi-Fi. Open networks can expose sensitive information. Avoid wallet transactions on shared connections, or use a trusted private network.
- Not checking token contracts. Before interacting with an unfamiliar token, verify its contract address on an explorer and check for lookalike addresses.
- Ignoring wallet updates. Updates often contain important security improvements. Delaying them leaves known issues open.
- Skipping two-factor authentication. Where a wallet or exchange supports 2FA, enable it. It's one of the cheapest ways to raise the bar on account security.
Remember
Your seed phrase is the master key. Anyone who has it controls your wallet — so store it offline, and never share it.
A quick daily checklist
- Backup seed phrase stored offline
- 2FA enabled where possible
- URLs and contracts verified before interacting
- Only trusted devices and networks in use
- Wallet permissions reviewed regularly
The goal isn't to be paranoid — it's to make mistakes expensive for attackers and cheap for you. Small habits, repeated daily, are what keep most wallets safe.
